This is the first one I did as well. I love the lift you gave to his left eyebrow (screen right) it adds just a bit more attitude! You did an awesome job with the hair and the shirt :)

It is such a lovely picture--couldn't resist, mate. Thank you. I had a hard time telling from the original photo what his hair was doing, so I'm glad it turned out okay. I do love fabric.

The reference photo for that pose is so dark, I had the same issue with that one and the one of Will Turner. I wound up having to tweak the contrast in paintshop so I could see where the head ended.

Now that was a technique I hadn't thought to try. Of course at the time I did this I didn't have Photoshop, but I'll have to remember that trick.

I also find it useful to turn the image to greyscale to get a feel for the shadows.

Sorry I'm being so spammy with comments today, I actually have time to be online!

Oh I love spammy comments. I'm quite addicted to getting any comments at all. I spend so much time mired in my office that they make me feel there are actual human beings out there in the real world. I actually print out the pictures I use because I tote them around to faculty meetings, and since my printer is black and white, they turn to gray scale.

I drag mine around with me as well tucked into my sketch book. Already my Chem classmates ask to see what I'm working on each week LOL. I just started on another Jack piece but keeping it simple for the sketchbook, I'll do a bigger one...a better one on drawing paper.

Yes, what do people do with themselves when they don't have drawing to keep their hands busy?! Someday I'll have to try using actual drawing paper again. I just keep grabbing stuff out of the printer as I run by.

I just picked up a nice little pad of drawing paper at Michael's, its even perforated at the top so I don't have to try and cut it out when I'm done :) Now I have a gazillion papers in different sizes. But usually its my 9x12 pad that goes places with me.
