Thank you for the kind words. You're welcome. Hey! Perhaps I should post my portrait of Sands on my LJ. It wouldn't fit in the POTC forums, but it's my journal! Your icon reminded me how much I like that twisted character.

Your drawings are really excellent !
Hope in the future you will give a try to the Navy Lieutenants, too^^. A gallery of POTC characters would be a great thing.
*hopefully*

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy them. I'd love to draw the Navy Lieutenants. Do you know of a site that archives screen caps of them? I have no trouble finding no end of Jack and Will, and Elizabeth and Barbossa are somewhat available, but I'd really love large clear pictures of more of the fabulous faces of the other characters--like the Navy and the pirates. They have to be clear enough to see the eyes well or I'm sunk.

I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I prefer this to the original. Technically it's flabberghastingly good - the stitching on the leather belt! The contrasting textures of his hair and waistcoat! Amazing! But I like his face better than Johnny Depp's, it's something about the eyes - he looks more formidable, more serious, more genuinely *piratey*. Less like an actor, if you know what I mean. I almost feel that you've caught the character better than any picture from the film could. It's wonderful.

From: [identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com
My mother has said the same thing. It is just a little different. And you've got it in one. It's something about the eyes. The left one is accurate, but the right one is placed just a little off. I do like the picture, but it is, as you say, a little more the character than the actor. I'm glad you like it. Thanks for commenting.

wow that's awesome! it's true, a lot of people have drawn it but I happen to be favouring yours over others I've seen. i think it's because some of the arts you can tell they were directly copying an image. yours somehow seems unique. this is a gorgeous piece fanart. kudos to you!

[have you drawn other things? own a deviantart account? i'm curious to see more of your work!]

Thank you for the affirmation. I'm glad you like my version of this familiar picture. I've drawn Huge Amounts of Stuff, but I just got my scanner a couple of days ago, so the only two drawings I have on line are this one and the previous one of Elizabeth and James (http://www.livejournal.com/users/honorat/14150.html). I will be posting more art on my live journal. Perhaps I should archive the art in my Memories section under Art?

WOW. The detail in this is exquisite. Absolutely exquisite.

I do like the fact that it is not quite Johnny, but definitely Jack. Lovely, Honorat.

Thank you. Yes, alas, I was trying for Johnny, but have yet a while to go. He is quite Jack though, so I'm happy everyone likes him. And detail is definitely my thing. I love creating textures with pencil.

Goodness, this is fabulous! I get so jealous of you people who can draw or do beautiful manips or be otherwise fine artsy. I get all these pictures in my brain but I just have no way to put them on the paper--except with words and sometimes they are just soooo inadequate. I'm discussing a PotC fan-art contest with a couple other people--keep an eye on [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm for details. :)

Seriously beautiful work!

You are, officially, the stuff. You did this with a mechanical pencil? Hell's bells, I can't get to the end of a frickin' grocery list with one of those!

This is amazing. And I find myself agreeing with you and galadhir -- it's more the character than it is the actor, which is quite cool, actually. Or...it's like one particular facet of the character, one side or flavor of him, shining through almost to the exclusion of the others. (Okay, how much sense did that *not* make?)

To try for something slightly closer to coherence, it's like this is the JAck that the mutiny made. This captures the fighter, the man betrayed, the sharper side of him. And it *is* all in the eyes, and the set of the face. There's almost the first hint of a snarl there. It's like you've captured him while he's in the cold place he goes to to get the job done.

And the texture and shading...wow. I can't draw for crap, but I adore artwork done in pencil. When it's done well, nothing looks more alive. And this is most definitely done well, in my opinion, anyway. The life in the eyes is perfect, and the details are incredible! I love the inlay work on the gun; that's just exquisite, and for some reason I won't ever be able to explain, I love the button on the cuff.

Absolutely awesome.

Date: 2005-09-30 04:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com
It was a 0.7mm pencil with a 2B lead rather than the standard 0.5mm HB which is thinner and more brittle. So it might outlast your grocery list!

I love what you said about this picture (you have such a talent with words). "The Jack that the mutiny made . . . while he's in the cold place he goes to get the job done." That gave me shivers. Underneath the odd mannerisms and the pretended foppishness, he's really dangerous. I'll look at this picture in a new way now. Thank you so much for the new insight and eyes to see.

Pencil is my medium more because it's uprootable and transportable and I have to draw on the run. I've always loved well-shaded work and am happy I've finally started to achieve it. Thanks for noticing the inlay and the button--the details are the fun parts.

*Blush* You'll make my head swell.

What everybody else said. *G*

This ... is Captain Jack Sparrow. It may not be exactly Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow ... but it is absolutely Jack. As someone else said, it lends a bit of sharpness, a bit of hard, shrewd deviousness to the character that we all know lurks underneath the facade of foolishness that he employs. Crazy like a fox, indeed! :-)

Absolutely brilliant - *Memories* :-D
Cheers ~

Thank you again for such kind words. I'm happy everyone seems to like this version of Jack. I've finally managed an actual portrait of Johnny/Jack since I posted this one, so if you keep hunting down art here (I have saved it under My Art in Memories), you'll eventually run across it too.

Jack is indeed only mad north-north-west :D And something else entirely different on every single other point of the compass I'm afraid.

Thank you so much for the art review--from the serial art committer.

I just came accross this unbelievably beautiful thing months after you posted it but...oh well.

It's fantasmagorically wonderful!!! I just had to comment once I saw his hand holding the gun. I have the POTC wall calendar, and December's pic is Jack steering a ship...and I just looked at his hand on the wheel. And then I looked at your drawing. And then at the calendar. Drawing. Calendar. Drawing. Calendar.

Anyhooooo...utter perfection.
