Date: 2005-11-13 07:56 pm (UTC)I like how you've added so much detail, but you've not gone overboard with tonal work. There is just enough to make the picture stand out, without completely over-powering it. It makes it look very clean and sharp.
So yeah, awesome work as always! :) "I said no lies!"

Date: 2005-11-13 09:19 pm (UTC)I'm afraid I want to draw all of Jack's strangest expressions. He's so good at them.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate your feedback. I try to do the foreground detail in a softer, darker lead and just give the out of focus softer tones to the background. I'm glad it's working.

Date: 2005-11-14 04:22 am (UTC)Damn, what a moment for a freeze-frame. Beautifully drawn, and I've gotta love your sense of timing on this one. :)
Jack, Jack, you sexy little wierdo, you.
And I can see the faces in the trees now. I was a little distracted at first glimpse. They look like little Brian Froud fairy faces.
I love the light in his eyes. And *man*, could you get a facet of the character that was farther away from that first drawing you did; the one with him holding up the pistol?
Wow. How long do these take you to do? (I'd get frustrated six minutes into it and bite the pencil in half or something equally psychotic, so I'm just curious.)

Date: 2005-11-14 04:37 am (UTC)ROTFLMAOL. I'm still laughing at this one. It's soooo true! And I love all his strange expressions. This is the first one I've tried to capture. Jack's got more facets than the Fateful Hope Diamond. And they're all sexy and weird. I'm sure more of them will be drawn in the future.
It's hard to say how long these pictures with backgrounds take me because I do them a few snippets at a time here and there. I'm sure it's over six hours but under twelve. Since finishing them is seldom the point--I draw to keep my mind tied down when I have to sit--I have infinite patience.
Thanks so much for the fun comments. *goes off chortling--sexy little weirdo! Ha!*

Date: 2005-11-14 06:21 pm (UTC)The look in his face is pure JohnnyDepp-as-JackSparrow. You have captured that look of his TO A "T". Kudos to you for that one!
Also, the rope in his hand is particularly good. Weird little thing I noticed. =) I hate drawing anything other than the character at hand so I'm always aghast at your splendid surroundings and the intricate detail you add.
Speaking of detail, his hair stands out in this one. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack's wacky hair, and it's easy enough to draw when I'm doodling but when trying to do serious art, it gets on my nerves. You make this all look so easy!
After eyeballing all your splendid art again - and how often you churn this stuff out - I have to ask a few questions, from artist to artist. How do you decide on what to draw? What do you do about references (ie do you sit in front of the computer/dvd player with an image or just use a picture of Jack and let the rest come to you)? Do you go through several pencils? [i'm old fashioned - i have a couple of handy regular old pencils that I use for different styles of shading and outlining] And how long does it generally take you to do each piece, given the detail you add? Do you do them all in one setting? You dont have to answer them all but I've been wanting to ask you for a while, because I'm so in awe of your art skills.
Fantastic art, and as I said earlier - my fave so far. Keep them coming!

Date: 2005-11-14 07:54 pm (UTC)I spent a great amount of my artistic career drawing floating heads and horses, but eventually I made myself put in backgrounds just because I liked how they looked when I was done.
Jack's hair! Oh much profanity! It is so hard to see what it's doing in pictures. That's probably several hours worth of hair drawing there.
I look at lots of pictures before I decide what to draw. Things I've been looking for are facial expressions that I've never tried before and hands (I love drawing hands). For PotC and other Johnny Depp movies I really like DeppImpact (http://www.deppimpact.com/) which has excellent pictures and screen caps. I print out on a black and white laser printer the ones I'm interested in (and I have hundreds more than I'll ever have time to draw). The pictures really need to be at least a half a page and fairly good resolution and not too dark or it's too hard to see them. Sometimes I'll look at the computer screen if colour can help me see something that is too similar in value otherwise. For non-Johnny Depp photo references, I use Google Image, which can be amusing, frustrating, or fruitful.
Once I've got the picture or pictures--sometimes I'll use several--I sketch an outline of what I want in it. I don't usually completely reproduce the photo. For instance, in this one, I drew it a lot closer up, which neccesitated changing the angle of his arm; and the screen cap did not show all his hat, so I found several others that did; I also used several other close-up photos of Jack's hair ornaments, because they were a little indistinct in the screen cap.
I draw each of these over quite some time. It would drive me insane to sit and do this for the whole day it would take. Since I have a job (and write way too much fanfic), I don't get much art time. Faculty meetings and church are my major art moments. When I was a student, I drew in class. Drawing helps me focus--I listen better when I draw. This means these all get drawn in fits and starts and small snatches of time here and there. Faces themselves don't take me long (about two hours per face--except with insane hair), but with backgrounds the time rises to 6-12 hours. These portraits usually take me three to four weeks to find that much spare time. And my original art with no photo references has to wait for the muse to speak, so they can take years to finish. I usually have about fifty different works of art going at any one time, many of which have been sitting for years.
Because of where and when I draw, my art is now uprootable and transportable. I've done watercolour and acrylic paintings, as well as larger drawings, but now I'm just hauling around computer paper. So my art is all within 8 1/2 x 11 inches. This means that to get this level of detail, I use mechanical graphite pencils. Generally, I use four: A 0.5 mm HB pencil for sketching the outlines; A 0.7 mm HB pencil for backgrounds; A 0.7 mm 2B pencil for shading foreground; and a 0.5 mm 2B for fine foreground detail such as strands of hair, eyelashes, patterns. Then I also use a fairly small tortillon (paper smudger)which helps create smoother textures and is the only way to have that soft-focus background. I usually use up one every two drawings. Finally, I love my kneaded eraser. Without it, I couldn't have created the battered texture of Jack's hat or the little highlights on folds and wrinkles.
It's nice to have someone interested. I'll have to check out your art when I get home and have access to art sites on my Internet. (It's a school and we have a draconian net nanny)
Thank you for the feedback and the questions
