Mechanical pencil?!

You, ma'am, are a genius.

And ooh, all your art is gorgeous! I especially love the one with Anamaria and Jack with the broken arm. And Scruffington. The eyes, guh.

Mechanical pencil, a tortillon, and a kneaded eraser, yes :D

I've always prefered this medium to any other. I'm glad you've enjoyed the art. Thank you so much for commenting.

Whoa. Seriously. The shading on her cheekbone is phenominal, I love the little shadowed crevis you gave her high up on it, toward her ear. Her hand is lovely, too, especially the wrist bone! You'll always have me admiring your anatomy, it's just so beautiful and carefully done! Wonderful!

Damn, she's beautiful. I love this portrait--I'm continually amazed by the life and expressiveness you are able to call forth with that magical pencil of yours.

Do you have an online link to the reference photograph by any chance? I'm curious to see it.

Isn't Zoe Seldana absolutely gorgeous. I loved this picture when I saw it, so I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Thank you.

Your drawing skill is phenomenal. I'm green with envy.
But this picture is not Annamaria for me, it's Zoe Saldana. I can hardly imagine Ana in that pose. Clinging to the bowsprit working on the ropes, or loading a cannon, mending a sail, sharpening her cutlass, wielding a throwing-knife (holding another one between her teeth), those are postures I could imagine Ana in.
That's of course a matter of taste.
Not meaning to be offensive, sorry.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked the picture.

Everyone has their own version of the characters. Anamaria is one we scarcely saw in the movie, but I've been writing her a lot lately. I can't imagine that her life is all weapons and rigging any more than it is for Gibbs or Jack. And I certainly doubt she's taken an oath of celibacy :D So this is Anamaria on the hunt in another context. I like complicated characters. I guess that's just my taste. No offense taken.

She's beautiful! I love the hint of mischief in her eye. You just know she's going to turn and pounce on Jack in another second or two.:-)

Thank you so much. Yes, that expression in her eyes is definitely an "up to something" look. Jack would be a lucky man if she did pounce him :D

She's a very beautiful, vibrant woman, and you've captured that wonderfully here. Wow. I never cease to be amazed at your talent! Must add to our fanart page at Black Pearl Tales immediately. Also Pintel and Ragetti -- missed them when I was updating last Saturday, though I know I commented on their excellence.

Thank you so much for dropping by to comment. Zoe is absolutely gorgeous, and I must admit that the more I write of Anamaria, the more I love that character. This was such fun to draw. Placement exams were very profitable this year. The first set resulted in another chapter of "Crossing" and the second in this art. The Black Pearl Tales is looking great. What a task to keep up with everything! You're amazing.

Well, not really. Still SO much more to do. But I wanted to get all the fanart posted first, because there is just so much excellent work there. And I've updated the resources, but I think I'm going to have to divide the catagories, make them more specific (and thus more useful). But I'm very happy you think it's looking good.

Again, your Anamaria is just beautiful, and I have to say it would be criminal if you didn't write just a little J/A smut romance, after doing such a wonderful job delineating their relationship in Crossing.

Absolutely gorgeous. Now you just have to get her to that pose from where you left her in Crossing. Actually, she's in the right spot already, isn't she? The conditions just have to change a bit. *g*

She is a bit of a beauty, isn't she? I'm glad this picture does her justice. Poor Jack is going to have to wait for this view until after DMC and AWE. Oh well, right now everyone is too exhausted anyway.

Thank you so much for the comment.

Thank you so much. I'm glad you like her. We saw so little of Anamaria in the movie, but her one smile at the end was quite enduring. I figure she can't be dealing with boat-stealing or undead pirates all her life :D

Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked this, especially the hair since I always have to make it up a little for Anamaria because Zoe usually has it so smooth and perfect. It's always good to meet another fan of canon PotC.

Gorgeous drawing... you have a wonderful sense of proportion and anatomy, especially when drawing hands. I know you used a photo for reference, but when I draw from photos I still have to use grids to maintain proportion, and I suck at hands, though I can't quite figure out why. But also seeing your drawing of Jack and Jip for Crossing the Bar, the proportions there are remarkably good for using no reference, IMO.

I'm curious as to how you achieve your blacks using just a mechanical pencil... I've always had to use charcoal and pastel to get black and not have that silvery sheen that lead leaves. I notice the blacks especially in her eyes - excellent job of bringing them to life! The hardest part of any drawing, IMHO.

From: [identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com
I spent most of my life drawing people without photo references. So I got reasonably accurate at proportions. I usually use my pencil to measure relative lengths or widths of things rather than grids. I've actually never used a grid though some of my earlier portraits could probably have used one! Hands are complicated because there is such an urge to draw the symbol for hand rather than what one actually sees. I used to make clothing for my favourite paperdoll when I was a kid, and she had lightly clasped hands, which forced me to struggle and fight and fail and finally succeed at a fairly difficult hand pose. Hands have been reasonably easy for me ever since. I'm actually a firm believer in tracing as an exercise for the realist.

As for the black in my drawing, I use a very soft lead in my mechanical pencil, so it's much darker than normal. In real life, it still does have that silver sheen at the right angle, but the scanner can edit that out. So the blacks may be a little more intense here than in the original.
