YAY!! Oh, this is lovely, dear. I like the publicity still that inspired this but there is something so wonderful about your drawings that it's even better here. Your art is always spectacular, but I have to say--this is my favorite of all the things you've drawn so far. Your attention to detail and texture is, as usual, stunning, but here you've hit on an extra note of realism and fidelity to the originals that I can't explain better. Beautiful stuff. =)

I had excellent high resolution source photos of the Internet. That always helps with the realism. I'm glad you like them. One can't go far wrong in the "beauty" category with two such subjects. :D Thank you for your kind words.

Ha! Just kidding. I'm not so cruel as to wish that on you. Actually we need to lock you in a room with your research books and whatever else you find conducive to writing so you can finish up 'Crossing' and 'Worthy', etc.

Alas, I am locked in a room with research papers and final exams, so only if I get an acute case of procrastination will any major writing get done. Drawing is my only escape, so I'm the only one having fun in meetings.

I recommend the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0874774241/sr=1-1/qid=1145724115/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-4919018-8344130?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books), if you're interested in developing photorealism in your art. To do copy work like this takes three things:
1 learn to see shapes rather than symbols (this will give you a headache at first)
2 take time rather than trying to do it all at once (it takes hours to do this kind of work)
3 be willing to make 10,000 errors (don't kick yourself if it's not perfect the first time, or the 100th time--I've been drawing portraits since highschool and they're only now approaching exact likenesses although they very quickly started to look good)

I'll have to check out that book. I used to enjoy drawing, but, as with my writing, it never really went anywhere. Took an art class once, in Junior High, and was very discouraged with what I produced.

But I work with the mother of this artist and she assures me that he had to learn the skill of portrait drawing, went to the same art college weemonkey6 is interested in, actually.

I really like their hands (wish I could get them to come out that well). And you handled the textures of the fabrics and the wall so well.

Thank you so much. I'm still a little unsure on the size of Will's hands. It's so easy to make hands too small. Textures are fun to try to reproduce, although at the 8 1/2 x 11 size, things get veerrrry small. I'm always open to concrit, although you may find I've already ripped my drawing apart myself. One of the reasons I keep doing these is that I'm never perfectly satisfied with them. So fire away. Hearing from another artist is always good.

I do bigger scale drawings but its nice to do the smaller ones because you can drag them around with you. I just picked up a nice little portfolio to hold an 11x14 pad as its hard to take an 18x24 piece anyplace to work on! lol

As for things I noticed were that some of the positioning of features was a bit off, Will's ear is just a hair low and a bit narrow. It makes the angle that he's holding his head appear higher but it doesn't work with where his nose and mouth are. The shadow under his jawline could be a bit stronger to define the shape and this will help with the position to make it appear more natural.

You did a great job with the angle of Jack's head, I love the little tilts and stuff he does. Most everything is proportioned well except his mouth is a bit wider than in the reference. If you look at where the corner of his mouth hits in reference to his eye you will see what I mean, its just a hair but its one of those things that can distort. I like that you gave both of them a bit of a smirk...very pirate!

Ok I hope that made sense...and keep doing them! I've been wanting to do this pose myself but with school and other projects haven't had the chance.

Have you tried the bristol smooth paper? It has very little tooth on it, its what I use most of the time and I like it. If you can't find it local you can order from http://www.dickblick.com/zz133/07/

Everyone before me has commented on your skill at drawing details, but I can't help but do the same. I'm especially struck, here, by the structure of the stones in the wall behind them, the folds and wrinkles in the shirts, the feather (which I love), and the hair, you do hair so very well :-)

Thank you so much for your detailed comment (in case you hadn't guessed, I'm rather fond of details). Fabric is fun to do because it doesn't look like anything when I start but as the shapes get filled in the clothing appears. The feather was an experiment because I'd never done one before. I'm glad you liked the floofy thing. I started doing PotC portraits to improve my mastery over hair--there is an abundance of excruciating hair in this movie. Now I should try Governor Swann's!
