Have I said I love your background detail? And the clothes and everything. And this is brilliant!!! (Though I'm still madly in love with your Sparrow picture.)

Ha! You're right about Frodo! You nailed the one that makes me not 100 % happy about this one. Glad you liked it anyway.

You are incredibly talented; what's there not to like? :D

I've taken to forcing myself to complete backgrounds. They're not as fun as portraits, but they do add to a picture. I'm happy you liked this. I've got another Sparrow picture or three in the works. The man is pure pleasure to draw.

*grins* He is.
And you're an inspiration.
I've got to the stage where I can make people look like the people they're supposed to, and they usually even have neck and shoulders attached to their head. Sometimes they just have a head floating in the middle of the page. I may even try attaching bodies.

Your pencil shading on this is beautiful--I especially love the ropes (I swear, I can see individual fibres!) and Elizabeth's hair.

This is great! You caught the expressions so well, Will's is hard to draw (I struggle with it too). The detail you can get with the mechanical pencil is fabulous :)

Thank you so much. If you can see the rope fibers, the scanner picked them up, because I did draw them :D Elizabeth's hair I can take a bit of credit for since the screencap just showed a windblown blur.

Thank you very much. I will have to master Will. It took me three tries with Elizabeth, so I've got one more to go with Will. I love mechanical pencils. I haven't drawn with a regular pencil for years now.

I've always found the trick is to make the bodies look like they come from the same universe and timeline and plane of existence as the heads. It's too easy to make them too small. Glad to inspire.

This is great! As someone said of your Sparrow picture, you've somehow caught the essence of the characters, and the anxiety of that moment in the movie. It's not an exact copy of a photograph, but an artists interpretation of the scene. The background, all the detail is splendid.

I was certainly taking liberties with the screencap here. I made Elizabeth closer to the same size as the other two--she'd been in the foreground. And I closed the gaps between them. And as usual, they're likenesses but not photocopies. As for the background. My goal is to someday draw a fully rigged ship with this level of detail. If I could just find a picture! Most internet ones are too small. Thanks for dropping by to provide review cookies for the muse.

WOW!

You can actually feel the tension because of how accurate you drew the expressions on their faces. Excellent - and the background is splendid as well. I hate drawing backgrounds but it really makes the picture so much more realistic.

are you a machine, churning out all this art? or are these old pics being scanned in? either way, i love how frequently you've been updating! =)

oh and i wanted to add how much i love your Gibbs again. you draw him to a T. he is perfect.

From: [identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com
Thank you. I'm glad the tension comes through. I grit my teeth and insert the background because I do like it when it's done.

No machines involved. The fanart pictures are the things I've drawn this entire summer of 2005. And the original art I'm posting on my LJ goes back several years. I just got a scanner. As soon as all the old work is up, I'll have to slow down to the speed I actually draw the pictures.

Can I keep Gibbs? PLEEEEEEEEASE?!?! Geez, that's gorgeous. Will and Liz are, of course, each the examples of youthful pretty that they represent.

But Gibbs? GIIIIIIIIIIIBBS!!! *ruffles muttonchops*

I love how the texture of the rigging and canvas shines through in this one. I can smell the salt and feel the wind.

Thanks for sharing your gift with us.

This is beautifully done!

Like many others who commented, I love the background and the detail.

I agree that there is something a little off about Will, but Elizabeth and Gibbs are so perfect that I really couldn't care less about that.

And OMG!!! More Gibbsy!

Thanks.

BTW. If it is OK with [livejournal.com profile] geek_mamma_2 would you be alright with me using the Gibbs icon she made from your last picture?

Gibbs is my favourite PotC character to draw. I actually find "youthful pretty" the most difficult portraits to draw. There are no points of reference on the faces. But Gibbs face is full of character. Every shape is intriguing. GIIIIIIIBBBBBBS! As you say. Thank you for your kind words. I'm thrilled the textures and the setting show through.

Yes, Gibbs is such a wonderful character with such an amazing face. I love drawing him. I'm glad you liked this. Thank you for commenting.

As far as [livejournal.com profile] geek_mama_2's icon, if you ask her, and she agrees, I'm okay with you using it if you credit her with making the icon and me with the art.

Do you use different leads or just the standard mechanical pencil?

Date: 2005-10-04 08:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] honorat.livejournal.com
I use the standard mechanical pencil mainly for sketching. But for shadiing I use a slightly wider and softer lead--generally 0.7 mm 2B lead. I'll also use 0.5 mm 2B lead for smaller details. The softer lead shades and blends easier as well as getting me closer to a black.

Not to sound like a parrot, but Gobbs and Elizabeth look amazing-- Gibbs is my particular favourite, since any Gibbs art is a bonus, and fantastic art of him doubly so!

I think the problem with Will is the proportions: he appears to be holding his head at a slight angle, and yet his nose and eyes are on a vertical line, and his mouth appears to be slightly too far right. But honestly, it only makes it seem a little off-- it still looks like Will, and the detail and complexity of the rest of the picture completely makes up for it!

I love parrots. Have a cracker. Gibbs is my favourite, too. I just wrote a not-drabble about him.

Yes, Will is the odd one in this trio. I'll be trying him some more.

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you liked this.
