More lovely comments that LJ isn't telling me about! Mmmmmm.

I love how agreeing to rescue will brought him closer to his idea of that duty rather than away from it, and that it was Elizabeth's courage and conviction that swayed him more than her actual offer.
When I was working on this novelization, I played every moment of this scene over and over again, watching the facial expressions of Jack Davenport. The man is an amazing actor. And the little glances down, the almost intervening comments that get swallowed, the movements of muscles in his face--they all led me to believe that Norrington was not in complete agreement with the governor in his decision. Which gave me a sense that the engagement was to appease Swann more than Norrington for Elizabeth. And when he tells the Governor that it is his duty to rescue Turner, I don't believe James is lying. In fact I tend to write on the assumption that characters don't lie unless they give me specific reasons to believe they are deceitful. James doesn't strike me as the sort of man to be swayed from his duty by a green girl, no matter how much he loves her. But he is the sort of man who will accept correction on what constitutes that duty, and that was what I saw happening here.

you paint a very unflattering yet forgiving picture of governor swann
I love Governor Swann. He seems a very real and ordinary person in a world of larger than life characters. He wants his daughter to make a good marriage and be safe and he wants nothing to do with adventures and pirates and derring-do. And really, how many of us can say we're much different? Cursed pirates are all very well in the movies, but I'm not interested in seeing them on my porch!

I love Norrington's reminiscing about meeting Elizabeth
I wanted to explore why this is a real tragedy, why he really loves her, even though he can't slip his duty enough to be the man she can love back. And of course I wanted to give Elizabeth a source for learning Naval strategy. There are too many plot bunnies in my life. I get the feeling I could write forever and never finish--which is why I love these movies.

I'm so glad you liked Norrington and Elizabeth in this scene. Too many times writers take sides. And I wanted to reveal both sides as utterly heartbreaking. As for Jack in DMC! Characters Redeemed While You Wait is the name of my organization. Check out Just Between Us Dying Gods (http://honorat.livejournal.com/45998.html) and Better to Reign in Hell (http://honorat.livejournal.com/44142.html). More will have to await the time to write it, but I have to do that scene with Davy Jones bargaining for Will.

Thank you so much for your kind words. You make my day!
