I have a hard time remembering how I felt about James the first time I saw him because it was so long ago, and I've seen it so many times since. But that first proposal, he was so endearing and stiff and nervous--and Elizabeth's half his age! And the ending where he steps aside and doesn't hold Elizabeth to her word. Yeah, he's a love.
I'm glad you like what I've done with Governor Swann. He's a bit of a buffoon in the movie, but it's obvious he really loves his daughter. And that place where he also acknowledges that Elizabeth may have been cornered into accepting Norrington's proposal--he is at least willing to have his hopes dashed for the sake of her happiness. He might hide out in the cabin during the fight on the Dauntless, but honestly, I think I would have too! Brrrrrr!
