Summary: More Art! This is for [livejournal.com profile] jackfan2 who helped me get into Livejournal in the first place, and who requested a Jack and Anamaria illustration for my story 7 To Dare Do All That May Become a Man in Crossing the Bar. This is my first fanart that uses NO photo references whatsoever. So any deviation from a perfect likeness can be blamed on that. I had a lot of meetings this weekend in lighting too low to use photographs, hence the original art. I've included the passage of which this is an illustration below the picture.

Crossing the Bar

8 1/2 x 8 inches, mechanical graphite pencil on printer paper.

“I have a request to make.” He moved towards her. She noticed he was trailing his hand along the ship’s rail again. Turning away, he gazed out to the ragged horizon, beyond the Navy ships, before he replied. “If the worst should happen . . .”

“Jack.” Anamaria tried to stop him, tried to keep him from putting into words her fears, as if somehow that would make them more real. But of course she failed. Jack could get more words in edgewise when a body wanted him to shut up than anyone else she knew.

“I’m just sayin’,” he shrugged, still not looking at her. “If there’s any reason I can’t do it, you have to take the
Black Pearl. Get her out of here, Ana.”

You know, if I was a lesser person, I could easily hate you. This is absolutely beautiful! I love the detail you've placed into the picture. I always love the way you draw textures and the ship's rail is a very good example of that. Beautiful work!!

I like Ana's lip-curl and the way her fingers are digging into her own arms. Those speak volumes more than anything else, I think.

YES YES YES!!! THAT'S PERFECT!

I do totally agree with the earlier comment from veronica rich about how Ana's fingers are digging into her own arms, indeed that speaks volumes of the intensity of the situation and her feelings barely in check.

Wonderful job and thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo much! Mind if I save a copy to my pictures file?

Yay! I'm glad it meets with your approval. Thank you. I enjoy trying to put emotion into my illustrations, so this was a fun sketch. I wish I had more photo references for Anamaria.

You are welcome and of course you may save it.

I'm glad you're a greater person, because being hated traumatizes me! LOL! I'm so glad you like this foray into the unknown. One of the reasons I've been drawing a lot from photo references lately is to develop techniques for texture, so thank you for letting me know it's working. I do appreciate your comments.

Anamaria always has such great body language, I had to draw her being fairly silently eloquent. Thank you very much for commenting.

My goodness, that is absolutely beautiful and perfect for the story. You must illustrate all your stories now! Okay, maybe not all. But you do it so well. That look on Jack's face is heartwrenching, and the body language is very telling as well.

The clothing! The hands! The hair! And the emotion in this piece is exactly right for that moment in the story. Fantastic work.

Beautiful! I particularly love their hair in the wind.

GUH...

You don't need photo references. Not at all!
This is beautiful! So real!

Ana looks really pissed off and Jack is genuinely worried. *envies you*
Love the hair! ;)

This is gorgeous! I love the look on Jack's face, how he can't bear to look at Anamaria. You really captured the emotion of the moment in their poses. May I save this?

Thank you so much. I usually do have the odd very rough (very odd) sketch or two sitting around for every story I write. I doodle in the margins when I'm handwriting. I'm glad the body language is delivering the right message. That was a fairly intense moment in the story.

Thank you. I don't think I know how to draw wet and rainy yet, but I'm glad "windy" is working.

*bounce* So glad you liked it. I'd never have been able to draw Jack's hair if I hadn't drawn him many times before from photographs. Thank you for letting me know the emotion is working here. I do appreciate your comments.

Thank you kindly. Yes, that moment was a little too intense for eye-contact. I'm glad the emotion is delivering in this drawing. Of course you may save this. I'm honoured that you'd like to.

Thank you. One of the reasons I started drawing fanart was to improve my ability to draw without photo references.

I definitely need more work on that, its hard for me to do conceptual pieces.

I spent years--up until highschool--drawing nothing but floating horses and floating heads out of my head. They were not things of surpassing beauty, but they did keep me practicing. My early landscapes tended to be mountains that looked like plastic and trees that looked like sawteeth. I took up illustrating when I started writing stories, and the whole thing got quite out of hand. One art major later, I could draw a pretty mean bird skull and ukelele, but I had to work on the illustrating on my own. Since I tended towards fantasy literature, that left me with few options but to invent my own art. I've always like pictures that tell stories.

Brava!

Adding my voice to the chorus telling you this is beautifully done. I had been hoping for some illustrations for that excellent and most exciting story.

Ana's hand "expression" is good, but I also love how Jack's hand is on the Pearl's rail, as if he's reassuring her, or thinking he might have to tell her good bye to save her.

Your devoted fans would love to see the doodles from your margins; is there any way you could scan those in?

Just don't draw an illustration for "Sisters". That would truly break our hearts.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I hadn't thought of illustrating any of the action in this story, although I've tried several portraits of Jip.

For some reason, that image of Jack brushing the Pearl's rail is one of my favourites too. I'm glad you noticed that aspect of the picture.

As for the doodling, I'd have to find the stuff. I'm not the most organized person in the universe, and after the rough drafts and doodles have served their purpose they end up stashed who knows where (I'm not the most organized person). If I find some, I'll try posting them. I'm rather fond of the one of Will's first sword fight with Gordon in "Worthy".

An illustration for "Sisters". Oooh. Art bunny.

(can look at this now that I've read the chapter - yay!)
This is indeed beautiful - Jack's hand on the rail and just the barest touch of wistfulness added to the worry in his face, Ana's frustration and coiled energy reined in tightly as she clutches her arms. Amazing.

You are taking advantage of holiday time! Thank you for the feast of comments. This was fun to attempt. Such a charged scene. I'm glad you liked the emotion in it--two people caring too much in very different ways.

Whenever I come back to the fanfic site I click on your profile and come straight to this drawing I just love it that much, I can't get enough of it. It's so heart wrenching to see these two like that *starts crying* I think I need some chocolate. Oh. My. Sweet. Cherry. Stars.

I'm honoured that you return to this. The relationship between Jack and Anamaria rather snuck up on me in this story, but they are such fun to write together. Thank you for such an enthusiastic comment.
