Mr. Gibbs is one of my favorite characters. For the “Down Time” drabble challenge at BPS.

He’s really down this time. Down with the pigs. Sleeping with swine like the prodigal son. They’re not bad company—pigs. Warm at least. Smarter than a lot of men he knows.

But hunger and craving for rum and memory of the sea are an ache in his gut.

Sometimes he wonders if he ever could have gone home—to anything he has called home. Would his father have forgiven? The navy never will!

Suddenly, cold water splashes. He squints up, bleary-eyed—with sleep, not rum. He’s never been this far down before.

The hand of a friend with the gold of Caribbean sun in his grin and the devil’s own fire in his eyes.

Time to get up again.

Who needs a fatted calf when he has Captain Jack Sparrow, a flagon of rum, and an adventure on the horizon?

And warmer than some we know, as well.

Time to get up again.
I can imagine Gibbs heaving himself with anticipation and reservation as well; a "here we go again" feel to it.

Good drabble; the litter beggars are habit-forming, aren't they?

Hi! Thanks for the quick response (Lives for reviews). I'll wave your way as I travel to Ashland next week.

Your comment about "warmer than some" made me crack up laughing. :D

Yes, Gibbs must have endured some highly entertaining and exasperating adventures with Jack in the past.

Drabbles are habit-forming? You have no idea!

Oh, I do love this. I love Gibbs, and I am delighted to see you give him a moment on the page. What a perfect look at his mind's working - and how touching it is to see his dismissal from the Navy had such deep effects, estranging him from his family. Poor Gibbs. He is both funny and tragic at once. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers ~

I'm so glad you like my Gibbs. He's one of my favorites in the movie and my favorite to draw. I hadn't actually thought that the loss of both Gibbs's former homes might have a common factor, but it could very well be couldn't it? It's interesting how writing always says more than an author even knows she's saying. Thanks for commenting.

Glad you enjoyed. I've always loved Gibbs with the pigs, so this was fun to write. Thanks for the kind words.

My dad used to help look after pigs when he was younger - he says they're remarkably intelligent and clean animals really too!

Loved the description of Jack, that's spot-on.

I have read that pigs are more intelligent than dogs--who are also smarter than some people :D

Glad you liked the moment of pirate smile. That's one of my favorite pictures of Jack.
